Apple is preparing to unveil the second-generation Vision Pro in late 2025, according to tech expert Ming-Chi Kuo. In a recent Medium post, Kuo stated that mass production of the device is planned to commence in the second half of 2024.
The most significant change for the Apple Vision Pro 2 will be a processor update from the present M2 chip to the projected M5 processor. This version is expected to increase computational power and improve the user experience by utilising powerful Apple Intelligence technologies. Kuo believes that, while the device's outward appearance would remain essentially unchanged, this continuity might enable Apple save expenses and, potentially, lower the device's pricing.
According to rumours, Apple is also working on a cheaper version of the Vision Pro with a lower-resolution display, which is not likely to be available for another two to three years. The M5 upgrade will also allow for significant increases in generative AI capabilities, which Kuo feels will be crucial in furthering the device's human-machine interface. The new AI tools might take the Vision Pro's capability to previously imagined heights, with text-to-video models playing a critical part in improving user engagement.
Apple's continued emphasis on reducing weight, increasing battery life and eventually lowering costs remains key to the development of Vision Pro 2. While Kuo did not mention any significant design modifications, he did state that progress in these areas is expected over time.
Apple Vision Pro's original incarnation was praised for its ‘spatial computing’ experience, which integrated effortlessly into Apple's environment. However, the high price and restricted initial availability hampered its penetration. With the next edition, Apple intends to make gradual enhancements, with the M5 CPU driving important performance gains.
Kuo also claimed that Apple Intelligence, which might incorporate aspects comparable to OpenAI's technology, would play an important role in determining the device's future. Rumours have previously predicted a new Vision Pro iteration in a few years, but with the major change being a processor upgrade, the second-generation device may arrive sooner than expected.
