A staggering 81 per cent of Indian professionals anticipate "significant" alterations to their job roles within the next year as a direct consequence of the rise of AI, according to recent research from LinkedIn.
The growing influence of artificial intelligence has led to a sense of uncertainty among 60 per cent of these professionals, who find themselves grappling with the sheer pace of change. An additional 39 per cent express concerns about their ability to keep up with the ever-evolving AI landscape.
But despite these apprehensions, the majority of Indian professionals are keen to embrace the AI shift, with 71 per cent expressing a strong desire to learn more about AI, even if they are unsure where to start.
The study further found that 68 per cent of the workforce in India is already incorporating generative AI into their daily tasks, with tools like ChatGPT being enthusiastically adopted. Millennials lead the pack, with 54 per cent actively using AI tools, followed closely by 46 per cent of Gen Z professionals.
Indian professionals are not only curious about AI but are also driven by a desire to stay competitive. About 66 per cent feel the need to be more knowledgeable about AI, perhaps due to the belief held by 65 per cent that their colleagues are better versed in AI than they are.
Interestingly, the survey also found that 98 per cent of respondents expressed excitement about integrating AI into their work, with a firm belief that it will catalyse career progression (97 per cent). This sentiment is supported by LinkedIn's data, which reported a 21-fold increase in English-language job listings mentioning generative AI technologies like ChatGPT. Evidently, AI proficiency is becoming a crucial asset for career development.
In a statement, LinkedIn’s India Editorial Lead and Career Expert Nirajita Banerjee said, “We’re seeing a significant increase in conversations on LinkedIn with members already adding AI skills to their profiles but our data also highlights the enormous value of soft skills and how imperative it is for professionals to continue leaning in on the skills they already possess, as we continue to navigate this new tech and changes ahead.”
When questioned about how AI will enhance their careers, 57 per cent of professionals cited increased confidence at work through faster access to knowledge, while 43 per cent anticipate quicker promotions as AI frees them to focus on value-added tasks.
Beyond these professional benefits, Indian professionals envision AI as a means to enhance job satisfaction (55 per cent) and achieve a better work-life balance (74 per cent). They also plan to invest their newfound free time in building professional networks (45 per cent) and acquiring new job-relevant skills (48 per cent).
Importantly, professionals recognise the enduring value of soft skills, such as problem-solving (77 per cent), communication (76 per cent), and creativity (76 per cent), even as AI tools proliferate in the workplace. These skills are seen as integral to career advancement.
