Honda Motor has been lauded by the Central Ground Water Board for pioneering groundwater recharge through Sekisui technology. Founded in 1948 by Soichiro Honda, the company remains dedicated to shaping a future where technology ensures a sustainable future for generations to come.
Since its inception, the automotive manufacturer has been on a transformative journey addressing environmental concerns, especially in transitioning from two-stroke to four-stroke engines. This shift reflects Honda's commitment to stewardship in innovation and environment- friendly processes.
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) Narsapura, the third factory of Honda two-wheelers in India, commenced operations in 2013. It is positioned as one of the largest two-wheeler facilities within Honda in the world. The unit boasts of an annual capacity of 2.4 million vehicles. The HMSI Narsapura facility is the only large-scale factory in India where the entire water requirement through the year is met freom rainwater collection. Significantly, it achieves the lowest specific water consumption among Honda's automobile companies in the Asia Pacific region.
Zero Liquid Discharge
The HMSI factory's commitment to sustainability is evident in its Zero Liquid Discharge status since inception. Utilising state-of-the-art technologies such as Reverse Osmosis, Waste Heat Evaporator, Electro De-Ionisation and Membrane Bio-Reactor, the facility exemplifies water conservation and recycling. The HMSI Narsapura factory has set benchmarks within the industry, achieving a commendable 80 KL water savings through closed rainwater collection tanks that prevent evaporation.
The HMSI factory has also introduced a proprietary Zirconium coating method in the paint shop's phosphating process. This innovative approach requires less water. Since it occurs at room temperature, the Zirconium coating method not only minimises the impact that the factory processes have on the environment, but also contributes to significant water and energy savings.
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) Narsapura therefore, not only inherits sustainable business practices from its parent company, Honda Motors, it also uses technological innovations of its own to ensure preservation and conservation of water. The company is the rightful heir to BW Businessworld’s ‘India's Most Water Efficient Organisation of the year’ title, having led by example in its sustainable business practices.
