The World Environment Day 2022 theme, ‘Only One Earth’, focuses on living sustainably in harmony with nature. As I reflect upon this theme, I can’t help but think of mention of the following mahavakyain our sacred vedic texts “ tat tvamasi”. This mantra signifies that all beings are intimately connected to universal energy and can’t be separated from it. And that’s why there are similarities between the nature of the cosmos (including earth) and the nature of human beings.
This earth…our only one & its natural environment gives us everything that we need to grow and sustain our lives. All of us should appreciate this beautiful phenomena and preserve this. By preserving and restoring the earth, we can actually ensure a free and constant supply of well-being services
How do we avail of these services? Here are 5 things to do for positive takeaways from mother earth:
1) Bask in the Sunlight – spend some time in the natural light as it improves mood (as serotonin gets released) & helps in absorption of vitamin D.
2) Healing greens – spending time in nature and looking at the serene green landscape will bring out positivity, relax your muscles and is known to reduce blood pressure too.
3) Outdoors to avoid Myopia– all of us suffer from digital eyestrain though we might not admit it. However, going outdoors and looking long distance develops good vision (especially in children) and studies show that it avoids myopia.
4) Eat local – focus on micro-nutrients and not just macros. Mineral, vitamins, enzymes etc are need for all our physiological functions and longevity.
5) Eat Herbs and plants – natural medicines. As our body is made up of one of the major elements of the earth, we should nurture it and consider inducing herbs and plants in the enhancement of our wellbeing
And this is why we need to change our ways of living and live in harmony with nature through policies and positive choices towards cleaner and greener lifestyle.
