From the sublime to bizarre to contentious, India has faced numerous moments that will be earmarked in history books. Here is a selective list of 35 that have made an impact and changed India
India hosted two events in 1982 and 1983. The first was the Asian Games, and the second was the Non-Aligned Meet. The two events offered a surreal glimpse of the contradictions that confronted India. The Asian Games marked the emergence of Rajiv Gandhi to public limelight. It was rumoured in those days that he had taken personal charge to ensure that the games were a success. The games also marked a furious drive by India to build modern and “world class” infrastructure in the capital city Delhi. The first series of fly-overs that criss-crossed Delhi came up before the games ,and the city was “rewarded” with many more amenities. Indians across the country got their first taste of colour TV, thanks to the Asian Games, the beginning of a consumer revolution that has made India one of the largest markets in the world.
