Hiring managers have a tedious task of going through several resumes every day. They hardly have a minute to go through a resume and shortlist the candidate, according to a study by TimesJobs.

You create a resume with all your efforts deciding the details to be included. Hiring manager shortlists candidates on the basis of the resumes without knowing the person. TimesJobs surveyed 690 hiring managers to know about the criteria that recruiters look for in a resume while short listing candidates.

“Even though most candidates will have the skills required for the job they apply for, the challenge lies in highlighting the right ones. Care must be taken not to fill up the skills section of your resume with a bunch of skills that have absolutely nothing to do with the job you are applying for. Even for the skills, you are including, you need to substantiate them. Therefore, it is not just important what skills you include in your resume, but equally how you highlight them,” says Ramathreya Krishnamurthi, Business Head, TimesJobs.

Candidates must customise their resume according to the job they are applying, highlighting their soft skills and job experience relevant to the job. Skills relevant to the job are the best chance for a candidate to be shortlisted, according to 40 percent recruiters.

Additional skills or keywords related to the job profile highlight the resume and increase their chance of getting elected while scanning the database of the resume.

30 percent of employers look for leadership skills, 26 per cent of employers consider teamwork & collaboration skills as pivotal, 33 per cent of employers feel communication skills are crucial, 22 percent of employers focus on analytical skills, 20 per cent of employers give more weightage to adaptability, and 17 per cent of employers say planning and strategic thinking skills are important.

‘First impression is the last impression’ and your resume is the first meeting between the candidate and the employer. Making a good first impression is important for a candidate’s career to take off, make your resume worthwhile.
